Marrakech Breaks Guinness World Record with Epic 80-Hour Storytelling Marathon

Marrakech has etched its name into the history books by hosting the longest storytelling session ever recorded, officially recognized by the Guinness World Records. The monumental event, which lasted an astonishing 80 hours and 35 minutes, brought together over 100 storytellers from across the globe in a celebration of culture, tradition, and the timeless art of storytelling.

The record-breaking feat took place during the Marrakech International Storytelling Festival, held from January 19 to 26 at the iconic Jemaa el-Fna square, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a historic hub of Moroccan culture. This year’s festival, themed “Bahja”—meaning “joy” in Arabic—embodied the spirit of Marrakech, showcasing its warmth, hospitality, and love for life.

The festival kicked off with a stunning parade through the winding streets of the old medina, led by Gnawa and Issawa musicians whose rhythmic beats set the tone for the week-long celebration. As the procession reached Jemaa el-Fna, the square came alive with the voices of storytellers, each weaving tales that spanned continents, cultures, and generations.

The storytelling marathon was a platform for cultural exchange and connection. Storytellers from Morocco and beyond shared their unique narratives, drawing from their traditions and personal experiences. The event also included workshops that reached over 5,000 students in local schools, inspiring the next generation to keep the art of storytelling alive.

Simon Martin, the British Ambassador to Morocco, praised the festival for its growing impact. “This event grows in energy every year,” he said. “It’s wonderful to see Moroccan and international storytellers coming together, sharing their craft, and learning from each other. The workshops they run in schools are incredible, teaching children to tell stories and preserving this beautiful tradition.”

By the time the final tale was told, Marrakech had not only secured its place in the Guinness World Records but also reinforced its reputation as a city where art, tradition, and community converge. The festival’s success highlighted the universal power of storytelling to bridge divides, celebrate diversity, and create lasting connections.

As the sun set on Jemaa el-Fna, the echoes of 80 hours of stories lingered in the air, a testament to the enduring magic of words and the joy they bring to people around the world. Marrakech, once again, proved itself as a city that thrives on storytelling—a place where every tale told is a thread in the rich tapestry of its cultural heritage.
