Preserving Culture, Protecting the Planet

Sustainability at Dar Gnawa

Cultural Preservation and Sustainable Tourism

We believe that sustainable tourism is key to preserving Gnawa culture while minimizing environmental impact. Our approach focuses on supporting local artisans through fair trade practices and showcasing traditional Gnawa crafts. We organize eco-friendly events, including zero-waste music festivals, that celebrate our cultural heritage while respecting the environment. Our community engagement programs, such as environmental education initiatives and partnerships with local schools, ensure that sustainability becomes a shared value.

Supporting Local Artisans

We're committed to preserving Gnawa craftsmanship by supporting local artisans. We ensure fair trade practices, providing artisans with equitable compensation for their work. Our museum shop showcases a wide range of traditional Gnawa crafts, from textiles to musical instruments. We regularly host workshops led by local artists, offering visitors hands-on experience with Gnawa art forms.

Eco-friendly Events

We organize zero-waste music performances, using compostable materials and comprehensive recycling systems. We are working also to introduce virtual tours, allowing people worldwide to experience our museum without the carbon footprint of travel. Moreover, we partner with local sustainable caterers who use organic, locally-sourced ingredients.

Community Engagement

We believe in the power of education to drive sustainable change. Our environmental education programs, offered in partnership with local schools, teach students about sustainability through the lens of Gnawa culture. We organize regular community clean-up events and offer volunteer opportunities for visitors who want to contribute to our sustainability efforts during their stay.

Green Building Practices

Our commitment to sustainability extends to every aspect of our museum’s physical structure. We’ve incorporated green building practices throughout, using sustainable materials like recycled and locally-sourced products in our construction and exhibits. Natural lighting is maximized through skylights and passive solar design, reducing our reliance on artificial lighting. We prioritize indoor air quality through the use of green cleaning products and natural ventilation systems. These practices not only reduce our environmental impact but also create a healthier, more pleasant environment for our staff and visitors, demonstrating that historical preservation and modern sustainability can go hand in hand.

Sustainable Materials

We have prioritized the use of sustainable materials during the renovation process. We source recycled and locally-produced materials whenever possible, reducing transportation emissions and supporting the local economy. All our paints and finishes are low-VOC, ensuring better air quality. Our exhibit construction incorporates eco-friendly practices, using renewable or reclaimed materials.

Natural Lighting

Maximizing natural light is key to our energy-saving strategy. We've installed skylights and light tubes throughout the museum, reducing the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours. Our energy-efficient window treatments help regulate temperature and light. The building's design of the Riad incorporates passive solar principles, optimizing heat gain in winter and minimizing it in summer.

Indoor Air Quality

We're committed to maintaining excellent indoor air quality for the health of our visitors and staff. We use only green cleaning products, free from harsh chemicals. Regular air quality monitoring ensures we maintain a healthy environment. Our ventilation systems, combined with state-of-the-art air filtration, keep our indoor air fresh and clean.
